FFC Results: 80% Of Fans Favour Action On Players' Wages

The results of our recent research into fans' opinions on players wages have been published by Virgin Money as part of our ongoing work on the influential Virgin Money Football Fans' Inflation Index.

Eight out of 10 fans believe footballers' wages should be either cut or capped, according to the FFC survey of 4,000 supporters on behalf of Virgin Money, revealed exclusively by the Guardian.

The Virgin Money Football Fans' Inflation Index found that 40% of match-day supporters advocate a wage cut for their own club's players while only 20% of those surveyed believe that footballers should be free to earn as much as they can. The introduction of a league-wide wage cap is supported by 41% of fans and it is most staunchly backed by football's most loyal demographics – 30 to 34-year-olds and season-ticket holders.

The swing towards a clampdown on wages might be explained by the increase in the amount that attending a match costs a typical supporter. Expenses such as train tickets, a pint of lager and match tickets have increased by 5% on last year, to an average match-day expenditure of £89.53.

In the Premier League, where no wage cap operates, the average player earns about £21,000 a week, or £1.1m a year, with the highest paid players – such as Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Robinho – earning up to £130,000 a week, almost £7m a year.

League One and Championship clubs have so far resisted calls for the introduction of the cap that operates in League Two and the Blue Square Premier, restricting clubs to a wage bill of no more than 60% of their turnover.

Malcolm Clarke, chairman of the Football Supporters Federation, said that the approach of the lower leagues should be adopted by the top three tiers of English football: "This is the way forward and we would like to see this introduced in the higher leagues to ensure financial responsibility.

"Like any other industry, football has to learn to live within its means and look after its customers, many of whom are suffering as a result of the recession," he added. "If this means more ticket price reductions and a bit less for the top players, so be it."

Fulham's owner Mohamed Al Fayed this week described player wages as "crazy", declaring he would campaign for a cap on the "sky-high" wages being paid in the Premier League, but a spokesman for the league said yesterday that imposing a limit on wages would be an "incredibly difficult concept", especially as it would have to be undertaken across Europe.

"A percentage cap would just lock in the big clubs with the big turnovers, meaning the bigger clubs would be able to pay the bigger wages," he said. "Clubs compete for the best talent and fans want to see the best players, which means they can demand bigger wages because they are in short supply."

FFC News: Active Bike Challenge - 4 Days To Kick Off

It's just 5 days until 8 football fans embark on the Active Bike Challenge, a 1,000 mile ride from the Nou Camp to Anfield in aid of the Marina Dalglish Appeal, which was set up to raise money for cancer after Kenny’s wife, Marina, was diagnosed with the illness in 2003.

Norwich City fan, Mark Whitwood, came up with the idea, after vowing to do a fundraising after his fiancé's father died of the disease 3 years ago, and it's heartwarming to see the football community coming together in support, making donations that the cyclists will bring back to auction at Anfield... a signed shirt from the Nou Camp, a signed Pompey shirt that will be presented by Peter Crouch who will be meeting them off the ferry in Portsmouth, signed goalkeeper's gloves from Edwin van der Sar...plus stops en route at Villa Park, The Brittannia, The City of Manchester Stadium, Old Trafford and Goodison to pick up donations.
The fans cycling the Active Bike Challenge are looking to raise £25,000 for this worthy cause.

We're received this from Neil Gentleman-Hobbs, co-organiser of the real Lincolnshire derby between Lincoln City and Grimsby Town fans earlier in the season, asking if we could help raise awareness of the ticket offer being run at Lincoln for the upcoming game against Exeter City.

We like decent ticket offers for fans...so if you're in the Lincoln area on the 18th this might take your fancy.

May the best team win!

FFC News: Grass Roots Football Live Hatrick and Offer

We're proud to have been to every Grass Roots Football Live since the first show at the Excel Centre in London back in 2005, first as punters and more recently as stand holders.

In our humble opinion, founder, Steve Chittenden and his team deserve a big pat on the back for building a great show that sits right at the heart of the game...and so...we're heading of to the NEC mid June to make it a Hat Trick of FFC stand appearances.

It would be great to catch up with any FFC members who are at the show and we've got a great ticket offer if you want to save a bit of cash, follow the link on the image for everything you need to know!

FFC News: The Half Time Team Talk - For Parents

We received this via an introduction from Mike Harrison, Editor at The City Gent fanzine, Bradford City.

Parentline are an independent charity providing support to parents, and have put together the article below for use in Football Fanzines, Websites, Blogs, Forums and Message Boards around the country.

It is for universal use, because the aim is to let know Dads and Mums know that there is support available if they need it. Parentline are seeing a lot of families being hard hit by the recession on their call data.

Please feel free to distribute this as widely as possible throughout the football community. Many thanks for your support!

The Half Time Team Talk - For Parents

You can’t let your kids go through life enjoying themselves. You were probably brought to the match as a youngster and just think what you've had to suffer over the years? How many heart wrenching moments have you had to endure over a lifetime of following your chosen club? Bad refereeing decisions, late goals conceded, days when the team simply did not perform and terrible traffic queues after the game, you’ve seen them all.

So why do we decide so early on to inflict the same on our kids? It has to be for those moments you can’t match. A goal. A moment of pure footballing class from one of the players. A cup tie against one of the top sides. A last minute winner, with a goal out of nowhere, against a team we really, really don’t like. In it’s very essence football has the capability of lifting us to the highest of highs or the lowest of lows.

But, for every other day of the week, being a parent is bit like the frustration felt by a manager on the sidelines. You will see your kids failing to follow simple instructions, inexplicably losing possession to one another and player-manager bust ups will regularly have to be patched up. But unlike football management, no-one has prepared you with a coaching badge before you started the job. Who is there even to give you the dreaded vote of confidence?

You won’t be making new signings, and as a dad or a mum, you have to get the best out of the squad you’ve got. If your players are continuing to stray offside, there is help at hand with online support at www.parentlineplus.org.uk (an independent charity). If the team isn't performing, the hairdryer treatment can be counter productive, but knowing you need to adjust your tactics, you can confidentially ring 0808 800 2222 (free from landlines and most mobile networks).

Eventually, you might get elevated to Director of Football; while your kids go on to manage their own teams. They’ll still need your advice and support from time to time, even then. You’ll also then be able to smile as you see another generation at the match.

FFC News: Support the Active Bike Challenge for the Marina Dalglish Appeal

On April 22nd 2009, 10 cyclists will be flying from Liverpool to Barcelona to embark on a charity bike ride. The aim of the event is to cycle the 1000 miles from the Nou Camp to Anfield Liverpool in 10 days, stopping at football grounds en route to raise awareness and money for the Marina Dalglish Appeal.

Marina works closely with several cancer wards and the aim of the Active Bike Challenge is to raise £25,000 for chairity between the participants.

"We are delighted that The Marina Dalglish Appeal has reached its original target of £1.5m and that the centre for Oncology at University Hospital, Aintree, opened on 4th June 2007... It is through your continued support and generous contributions that we have been able to achieve our goal.

We have now set ourselves a new and exciting challenge in conjunction with Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology to help build a much needed Radiotherapy Centre in University Hospital Aintree, bringing the treatment closer to the patients.

Kenny and myself have been constantly amazed at how much time, effort and money you have all been willing to donate, and we realize that nothing would be possible without your help. Thank you all very much and hopefully together we can achieve our new goal!"

Marina Dalglish

If you'd like more information on how you can help this cause, either with sponsorship, donating items to raffle at the challenge charity dinner, or equipment the team will need, please get in touch with the Active Bike Challenge team: charity.ride@activebikechallenge.co.uk
